Dear STANZA member:
The ministry of Education is looking for a STANZA member who can be a representative for the association. Writers have been working on the first version of guides to teaching and learning Spanish and the Ministry is looking for some initial, informal feedback.
To explain a little further:
Learning Languages is the new learning area in the New Zealand Curriculum (2007). The learning languages achievement objectives and the learning area statement (page 24) provide the generic framework for teaching and learning languages in English-medium schools.
There are also key competencies and values which are integrated into language learning processes.
The achievement objectives in the learning languages Communication strand provide the basis for assessment. The two supporting strands are only assessed indirectly through their contribution to the Communication strand. The achievement objectives are generic to encompass all languages that may be offered for learning in schools. Language specific documents provide further information for designing effective teaching and learning programmes.
It is these language specific documents which are now being aligned to the New Zealand Curriculum (2007) as guides to teaching and learning (the languages). The Ministry values feedback from the STANZA and would like to identify a representative for this initial work.
